Re: Jury Service
I'm quick picky about this.

I'd like to do jury service for the experience, but wouldn't want a boring case or to be sat around for hours doing nothing, and I wouldn't want something that is likely to give me PTSD for the rest of my life.

Re: Jury Service
I've done it twice and turned down a third after pointing out how unreasonable it was to expect me to do it three times in the space of a few years.

Both my cases were bungled police investigations full of obvious holes which shouldn't have come to court. You'd think somebody would tell them but that would be far too easy.

Haunting, bet they still struggle with the memories and nightmares to this day.

Bet the James Bulger trial can’t have been easy either

A teacher of mine was a juror on the James bulger trial, can you imagine

Re: Jury Service
I had my two week stint at Chelmsford Crown Court in July didn't get a case for four days so pretty boring up to then.
Finally on the Thursday got selected for a case a junkie who was accused of possession with intent to supply found guilty of possession but split on the supply charge.
All in all it was all wrapped up on the following Monday and that was it didn't have to attend anymore.
The other thing was that we ended up with only ten jurors as two of them got pinged from the Covid app.

Its a good insight into the criminal justice system.
Good if you get on a short case, but get a meaty one you could be on it for months

Expect Boredom, sitting around in a bland government building eating food from a bland canteen.

You might get allocated to a case, you might not.

I recommend buying Justin Ps book :-)

Trial by WHO jury would be fascinating. A shame there aren't 12 individual posters on here any more though

Jury service is excellent. Closest many get to democracy in their lives.

Re: Jury Service
My brother did it a few years back.

It was a case where a young kid was looking after a beretta pistol for some gang in a council flat, was waving it about or whatever and shot his girlfriend dead.

15 year old got nine years for manslaughter in 2014 so is most likely already out.

“You will get an object lesson in how hard some people find it to follow a chain of evidence. Seriously, the jury room gives almost as scary an insight into the state of the country as whatever scrotes are in the dock.”

100% this. Is scandalous. One guy on my jury barely spoke English. Judge seemed perfectly okay with that. Unreal. Another had made his mind up before the case even started. The majority on one case wanted to come to a conclusion based on whether they felt the punishment was deserving of the crime. It’s scary stuff and made me think jury trials are utterly disgraceful.

There's a lot of boring waiting around, so take a book.

The catering is usually shit, so take a sarnie.

The judges are generally pretty decent at explaining things, but you might just get a wanker who forgets basics stuff (like that you do not find anyone innocent, you find them not guilty - a subtle but important distinction).

And experience (not mine!) shows that if you can't work out what reasonable doubt is, you'll likely end up on the front page of the Mail.

Re: Jury Service
Look forward to it. Try to get a firm grip on the evidence, and don't be over-swayed by the silver tongued eloquence of barristers. Use a notepad to write down what you consider to be the key points both for and against the defendant, because those points are what you will discuss in the jury room.

I could go on at length but because they would not pay my wages I wouldn't be a slave,is that rapid enough for you?

Re: Jury Service
You are being very harsh on the previous posters.I refused to do jury service because as I am self employed I would lose my wages. The difference was hundreds of pounds.Calling people idiots demeans those who stand up against the so called authority.

Yeah crotty that story fizzled out really rapid.

Re: Jury Service
There have been a few posters thinking they’re telling an interesting story and yet not one person has.

Also a few that have given advice on how to get out of it, even though the thread starter doesn’t want to. They’ve seen a post, made an assumption and jumped to a conclusion without taking in all the facts.

That in itself tells you how the jury system is flawed. It relies on idiots too stupid to understand what they’re seeing and hearing

Re: Jury Service
I answered my summons for jury service and after ther the introduction I informed the usher I am not doing this but was ignored. At 2.00 pm I was lead into court and when I was asked to swear in I said I'm not doing this,to cut a long story short I was sent home.
